Mike Michalowicz (The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur) sent me the following email last Friday and here I am at 4.22am now writing about it...........
I'm a little embarrassed I haven't shared this with ya yet Helen. It is stupid simple to do, and man, does it ever help you avoid price competition!
Here is the dealio... your customers beat you up on price whenever they think your service (or product) is similar to the competition's. And they think you and your competition is the same, because they don't really have the time to remember all your cool differences. They have too much on their plate. So, instead, they just remember you by your label.
You aren't an Ivy league trained, 23 years of experience, latest-and-greatest technology, dentist. To them you are just plain ol' dentist. Or just a computer guy. Or just a whatever.
Your competition is also "just a whatever."
And since a dentist is a dentist, and a computer guy is a computer guy and an apple is an apple, in your customers mind you are no different then the other guy. Therefore the cheaper one wins. Let the price war begin!
But wait!!!! There is a TPE way to break free of price wars. You do it by assigning yourself a unique new label. All you have to do is give yourself an uncommon, incomparable label for your customer to remember. And when you do, you will no longer be "just a whatever", now you are the first and only. Which, trust me, is a goooood thing.
So don't tell 'em you are dentist. Tell 'em you mandible therapist. Your not a computer guy, you are a data logistics facilitator (you know a DLoF, for short). You are not an apple but a brapple (which is a made up word for big-red-apple).
You see, once you have a different label, you can provide the details on what really makes you different. And the customer won't forget. They'll remember your different..... because your label is different.
Hope that make sense. Try it, you will be shocked how well it works. Using this technique should be a no brainer, since you aren't a business owner after all. You are a Toilet Paper Entrepreneur.
